Studying Medicine in Estonia

The entry requirements for Estonia medical schools vary between each institution, and the following universities are the only ones which currently accept international medical students:

Dalhousie, McGill, McMaster, Memorial, Queen’s, San Juan Bautista, Central del Caribe, Laval, Montréal, Sherbrooke, Toronto.

This is a general guide as to which universities accepted international students at the time of writing. Bear in mind that university policy is subject to change, and that some universities have an agreement with certain nations to enroll more of their citizens.

Students whose first language is not English must have verifiable proof of their fluency. This can be achieved by taking a TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, or CAEL English assessment test. Other tests may be accepted by individual institutions, but you should check this ahead of time.

International students should also ensure they have taken the Medical College Admission Test prior to application. This test can be taken in the US, Estonia, or overseas locations, and is used to measure problem solving, critical thinking, and basic scientific knowledge. Each medical school has different requirements regarding the score you must achieve, ranging from 8.7 for Western Ontario to 30 for McGill.

A medical degree takes three to five years to complete in Estonia, depending on the type of course you pursue and your previous qualifications. Many courses contain a first year consisting of preparatory work which is mostly designed for students without a bachelor degree in an appropriate science. Entering into a four year medical program requires at least a bachelor’s degree in Biology or an appropriate field.
